May 10
I have to admit morning in the parking lot was COLD. Everyone was bundled up so much you could hardly tell who anyone was.
We pulled out of Sun Valley headed for our first stop of the day Arco, ID. We followed Hwy20 to 20E through Picabo and into Carey. From there we follow US20/26E/93 through the Craters of the Moon Park. It is so strange to see snow capped mountains on one side and what looks like the land scape from another planet on the other. It really looks like the earth just opened up and turned itself inside out. It's black and dark and I'm not sure you could even walk across it, it's that rough.
After the park we proceeded to Arco, ID. The "First city in the WORLD to be lit by ATOMIC POWER". It's a small town of about 1800 to 2000 people, but they were out in force to welcome us.
Leaving Arco it was Hwy20/26 through Butte City and Atomic City. We then followed Hwy26 toward Blackfoot. We picked up I-15 and headed toward Pocatello for a short while. We took exit 31, circled under the bridge and we were in Downey, ID.
The Downey fuel stop was amazing because right across the street was a field of horses that came right up to the fence. Of course everyone from the ride had to have their photo taken. It was like they had never seen a real horse before. Then the view was incredible. Mountains, some with snow some without surrounded the station. I would have worked there just for the view.
Back on the road headed to Ogden things begin to look familiar to me and I realized that we had ridden up this same road on the way out. Idaho is a beautiful state, but Utah is one of the best states to ride. I can't explain it but it's just different.
In Ogden, we had only been on the bikes for 84 miles; we made a quick stop and were headed to Park City, UT. It was I-84 to I-80 to exit 155 to UT32. We turned on Hwy32S through Peoa and Oakley . UT 248W to UT 224/Deer Valley Dr and then onto Main and we were there. As we rode up main everyone from ever shop, bar or restaurant came out to wave hello. It was a cool greeting for everyone on the ride.
We stayed the night at Stein Eriksen Lodge, and it ranks as one of the top 5 places we've ever stayed. We had a private party that the Seminole Tribe of Florida sponsored and everyone turned in for the night, well almost everyone... Miles, 392
